Instructions for Perfect Cinnamon Rolls
Mix the Dough
Combine all dough ingredients in a mixer bowl. Knead on medium speed for 12–15 minutes. The dough should pass the windowpane test when done.
Proof the Dough
Lightly oil a separate bowl. Place the dough inside and let it proof until it has doubled in size.
Roll the Dough
After proofing, roll the dough into a rectangle on a clean surface.
Add the Filling
Spread softened butter evenly over the rolled dough. Then sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.
Fold the Dough
Fold the rolled dough like how you'd fold a letter to place into an envelope. Bring the top third down and the bottom third up. Roll it out again into a 20-inch-long sheet.
Cut the Dough Strips
Cut the rolled dough into 2-inch-wide strips.
Shape the Rolls
For each strip, divide it into 3 strands. Pleat them together and then roll into a ball shape.
Final Proofing
Proof the dough balls until they double in size or pass the poke test (when gently poked, the dough should spring back only half way - this means it is ready to bake. If it springs back fully, it's underproofed, and if it doesn't spring back at all, then it's overproofed).
Bake the Rolls
Brush the rolls with egg wash. Bake them at 180°C for 20–25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
Enjoy Your Cinnamon Rolls!
Enjoy them as they are! For that extra zing, drizzle them with some cream cheese frosting. The combination of warm, soft dough with sweet, creamy topping is sure to delight.
Additional Tips for the Best Cinnamon Rolls
Storage and Freshness
Once you’ve made these rolls, you might wonder how to keep the extras fresh. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them for up to a month. Just make sure they are fully cooled before wrapping them tightly.
Experiment with Flavors
Feeling adventurous? You can modify the filling by adding nuts, raisins, or chocolate chips to the cinnamon sugar. These additions lead to a burst of flavors in every bite.
Perfecting the Dough
The dough consistency is crucial for fluffy rolls. Ensure that you don't add too much flour while mixing. A well-hydrated dough is your friend!
Tools You'll Need
A stand mixer with a dough hook is recommended for kneading, or you can use a hand mixer, but you can always still do it by hand too. Additionally, having a rolling pin, pastry brush, and a sharp knife will make the process much easier.
Indulging in homemade cinnamon rolls is a joy that brings comfort and warmth to any kitchen. Happy baking!
